Personal statement

Lianjin Tao, professor and doctoral supervisor, is in the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering and Underground Structures of Beijing University of Technology. He got his Ph.D. degree from the Northeast University of China in 1996 and join in Beijing University of technology in the same year, then he became an outstanding professor in the area of Geotechnical Engineering. In 2002 to 2003, he visited the Department of Civil engineering, Royal Military College Canada. His academic interests include but not limited to dynamic response and seismic design of underground structures, life-cycle risk analysis of underground structures and failure mechanics, rock mechanics related engineering projects, especially on slopes and tunnels, and so on. He has been one of the pioneers in China put sights in seismic design of underground structures and has been engaged or directing several national codes or local standards over seismic design of underground structures. Such efforts have also gained him several rewards such the “National Science and Technology Reward” and “Science and Technology Reward of the Ministry of Education of the People’s republic of China”. He has been working on constructing methods of extremely difficult geological or small distance conditions and had built up a set of practical methods in overcome such problems which not only completed related mechanical theories but also bring the actual project with significant benefits in investment. His rock stability concept has also been adopted to 15 Highways. Until now, he has published more than 160 technical papers, of which more than 40 are indexed by SCI/EI/ISTP. He has also been supported by the National Science foundation of China, the administration of Science and technology of People’s Republic of China,Beijing Municipal Council and other affiliations and company with more than 100 projects. Besides Researching and in-situ work, he is also a popular professor among students in his teaching course ofgeological Engineeringandadvanced rock mechanicsby his abundant experiences in actually project and deep insight in mechanical theories. Thus,he is now leading a team of more than 20 persons in tight connection including associated professors, post-doc researches, Ph.D candidates and post graduate students.
