The Institute of Water Resources and Water Engineering at Beijing University of Technology was founded in 2007, early known as the graduate faculty of North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power in Beijing. The institute relies on the hydraulic engineering discipline, with master granting rights in hydrology and water resources, hydraulics and river dynamics, hydraulic structures engineering, hydro-power engineering, and coastal engineering.

The Institute attaches great importance to fundamental research and application research of water issues by combining countries' and regions' significant strategic needs such as the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, the efficient utilization and allocation of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei water resources, and the dynamic monitoring of groundwater quality.

Discipline construction closely combines the superior resources of the dominant disciplines and laboratories in Beijing University of Technology, including disciplines (water supply and drainage science and engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, etc.) and laboratories (Key Laboratory of Beijing for Water Quality Science and Water Environment Recovery Engineering, Key Laboratory of Urban Security and Disaster Engineering of the Ministry of Education, etc.).

The Institute runs a series of specialized courses for either undergraduates or postgraduates majoring in water supply and drainage science and engineering, including Hydraulics, Water Analysis Chemistry, Hydrology and Geology, Water Engineering Economics and Management, Water Resources Development and Protection, Theory and Technology of Water Environment Model, etc.

The research area involves: (1) water resources management and water environment protection; (2) theory and technology of urban and watershed hydrology; (3) structural earthquake-resistance of hydraulic structure and dam safety analysis. The institute actively seeks cooperation at home and abroad. Domestic and foreign experts/scholars can apply as a visiting scholar to conduct independent or collaborative research in the Institute. We also welcome experts/scholars bringing their funding and issues.

At presently, the hydraulic engineering discipline has more than 30 academic and technical staff, including one Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, seven professors, ten associate professors, and senior engineers. The doctoral rate of full-time teachers has reached to 80%.
