The discipline of disaster prevention, reduction and protection engineering is featured by the earthquake resistance and reduction of cities and engineering. It is the key development discipline of the "211 Project" in the Tenth Five Year Plan of the University, and has been listed in the national key discipline development plan. At the same time, it is also an important supported discipline of civil engineering, which is included in the double first-class discipline development scheme of Beijing University of Technology. The Institute of Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Protection Engineering has been closely focusing on serving the strategic needs of major infrastructure projects in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the country, focusing on the international frontier of discipline development, and has many years of research foundation in the fields of urban and engineering seismic disaster reduction, intelligent structure and vibration control, structural health monitoring, design theory and application of large and complex structures, seismic performance of new structures and components, complex disaster prevention, etc. The Institute of Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Protection Engineering and the discipline of disaster prevention and reduction and protection engineering are supported by the Beijing Key Lab of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Retrofit of Beijing University of Technology and the Key Laboratory of Urban Security and Disaster Engineering of Ministry of Education. In recent years, remarkable achievements have been made in discipline orientation, echelon construction, scientific research projects, scientific research outcomes, personnel training, international exchanges and cooperation, etc.

The Institute of Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Protection Engineering has been formed by a research team composed of well-known scholars, young and middle-aged professors, doctoral supervisors and doctors. Academician Zhou Fulin was employed as a part-time academician. At present, there are 24 full-time staffs, including 1 distinguished professor of Changjiang Scholars from the Ministry of Education, 1 distinguished professor received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 11 professors, 7 associate professors and 5 lecturers. In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 80 vertical and horizontal scientific research projects, including 3 major projects of NSFC, 14 general projects of NSFC and 1 “973” project. The institute has also undertaken the practical engineering projects of technical services and developments. Many achievements have been applied to the construction of national key projects such as Beijing Olympic Stadium, National Convention Center and Nuclear Power Conventional Island, the reconstruction and expansion of the library of Beijing University of Technology, the library of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture and other large-scale infrastructure projects, which have greatly promoted the scientific and technological progress and engineering application of disaster prevention and mitigation and created remarkable social and economic benefits. The institution has won 2 second prizes of national science and technology progress awards and 11 provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards. In the past five years, the institution has published more than 400 academic papers in domestic and foreign academic journals and in conferences, and obtained more than 100 national patents. The institution has trained 10 postdoctors, more than 60 doctoral students and more than 210 master students. Staffs and students participated in international and domestic academic conferences frequently, and invited foreign experts to give lectures all the year round.
