Introduction

The research work of the Institute of Road and Bridge Engineering (IRBE) at Beijing University of Technology was initiated in the year 1961. Significantly creative contributions to the economic and social development of China have been made by this sub-discipline in its more than 50 years of history, covering the areas of structural mechanics analysis and construction monitoring of long-span and complex bridges, anti-seismic and vibration control technology of bridge structures, planning and design of urban overpasses, integrated survey and design of roads, design and construction technology for highway tunnel, and pavement materials.

The team at IRBE is made up of 21 academic staff at the moment, including 10 full professors, 6 associate professors, and 5 assistant professors. Among the professors, one has been awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholar and one received the prize for Changjiang Scholar.

Research Outcomes and Awards

The IRBE team played an active role in the development of civil engineering in Beijing. They have provided higher level consulting advice for major national infrastructure companies and many new developed technologies have been applied to many landmark engineering projects, such as the transportation infrastructure construction for 2020 winter Olympic Games, Beijing New Shougang Bridge, Jingxiong Expressway. The research outcomes have been the bases for a number of important design codes and standards, such as the national seismic design code for urban rail transportation structures, design code for precast bridges. The IRBE team has won several Science and Technology Progress Awards in the national, provincial or ministerial levels.
