Department (Institute) of Architecture is one of the teaching and research organizations under the framework of Faculty of Urban Construction. Founded in 1980, the institute has been dedicated to architecture education at various level for more than 40 years. We offer undergraduate architectural program leading to the award of a Bachelor of Architecture (5 years in length) and postgraduate course leading to the award of a Master of Architecture. Both of the programs are fully accredited by the National Steering Committee for Higher Education in Architecture, Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The accreditation was firstly granted by the authority in 1998, and then reaffirmed in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 (the next evaluation will be made in 2022).

The institute is one of the leading architectural schools in Northern China. It ranked the 13thand the 17thin the China Discipline Ranking (CDR) conducted by the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2008 and 2019 respectively (54 universities participated in the 2019 CDR national wide). The discipline was short-listed as one of the key disciplines with distinctive features by the Beijing Municipal Education Committee in 2009 and by the MOE in 2010. We were further selected by the MOE to enter the national Outstanding Engineer Cultivation Program (OECP) in the first batch and the list of National First-class Undergraduate Majors Development Program in 2019. The latter is seen as an outstanding recognition by the field of higher education in China.

In the area of scientific research, the institute is dedicated in the development of research outputs in four themes. The first one is looking at historical building conservation and retrofit with substantial studies in architectural history. The second one is to study large public buildings and their systems, especially comprehensive hospitals, and also focus on how to integrate vertical and multi-layer space above as well as under the ground. The third theme is to serve the vulnerable people in the modern built environment, with the focus on elderly care oriented residential community, rural housing improvement and public space regeneration. The final theme is the domain of green architecture and sustainable technology including environmental simulation and parametric design theory and practice. Staff of the institute has published widely and some of them are well-known scholars in their specific research circle.

The institute has 7 full professors, 13 associate professors 20 lecturers, 60% of them have doctorate degrees. Each year more than 60 undergraduate students and 45 postgraduate students are studying with us. We are continuing to cultivate high-level interdisciplinary talents with solid theoretical background and practical skills in engineering. Our students are widely praised by their employers.

We have also established partnership with several famous universities worldwide such as the University of Cincinnati, University of South Australia, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Cardiff University etc. Many of our students have participate in the exchanging program to study overseas for a short period of time and also lots of international students come to BJUT to pursue their degrees. We respect the cultural diversity and do believe building an international perspective is very important for a higher education institute to thrive in the 21stcentury.
