The Research Institute of Road and Urban Railway Engineering of Beijing University of Technology mainly carries out the tasks of higher education, scientific research and social services under the support of discipline of Road and Railway Engineering. In 1961, the major of Highway and Urban Road Engineering was established in Beijing University of Technology. In 2000, Beijing University of Technology obtained the professional authority of Road and Railway Engineering from the Ministry of Education of China. In 2007, the discipline of Road and Railway Engineering became the Key Discipline of Beijing. In 2009, the Institute of Road and Urban Railway Engineering was established in the College of Architecture and Engineering, Beijing University of Technology. In 2013, the Department of Road and Urban Railway Engineering was established in the College of Metropolitan Transportation, Beijing University of Technology. In May 2020, the Research Institute of Road and Urban Railway Engineering was newly established in the Faculty of Architecture, Beijing University of Technology. The research institute currently has 10 full-time teachers, including 2 professors, 4 associate professors and 4 lecturers.

Since 2000, a total of more than 20 million RMB yuan has been invested in the construction of road engineering laboratories. The laboratory area has reached 400 square meters. It can carry out experimental and research work in the fields of asphalt and asphalt concrete, cement and cement concrete, road subgrade and base course materials, pavement performance evaluation, road and railway structural mechanics analysis, road alignment design, intelligent road paving, railway operation management and others. The main research fields include:

1. The modern optimization design theory of road alignment, the safe operation and maintenance technologies of traffic infrastructures;

2. The service performance evaluation and life prediction of pavement materials, and new technologies of green road materials;

3. The intelligent evaluation of road durability, the theory and methods of decision-making for maintenance;

4. New theory and technologies of smart road;

5. The optimization technology and strategy of urban railway transit operation management
